In 1977, research engineer Pete Riegel published a seminal paper in Runner's World establishing that human world records from 1,500 meters to marathon distance conform to a power curve: T = a · D^(1.06).
The 1.06 exponent represents the unavoidable aerobic fatigue rate: as distance doubles, average speed decreases by approximately 4.1%.

What pace is needed to run a sub-4 hour marathon?
To break 4 hours in a marathon (42.195 km), you must maintain an average pace of 5:41 per kilometer (9:09 per mile) or faster.
Can Riegel's formula be used if I haven't done long training runs?
The formula assumes adequate endurance training for the target distance. If you have only trained for 10K, your lack of aerobic endurance base will cause you to slow down significantly more than the 1.06 factor predicts.
How do I convert min/km pace to min/mile?
Multiply your pace in decimal minutes by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km (5.0 min) × 1.60934 = 8.046 minutes = 8:03 min/mile.
